Surgery For Stretch Marks: When Should I Consider It?
Don’t yo
u think it would be great if we could have all of our stretch marks removed surgically? Well, unfortunately that is not totally possible. But take heart, because surgery for stretch marks is available.
For the most part, this is restricted to laser treatments which are done in a doctor’s office – generally by a doctor who is board certified in dermatology and plastic surgery procedures.
This type of surgery generally works best on stretch marks that are relatively new and small in size. Older stretch marks have a lower success rate in being treated with a laser because of the scarring that has taken place.
In some cases when people have lost a great deal of weight, the surgeon will do a procedure that is commonly known as a tummy tuck; this is surgery for stretch marks only in the sense that a certain amount of skin is resected and the abdominal skin is thereby tightened, resulting in removal of stretch marks that have affected the area of skin that has been removed. This is probably the only instance where a surgical procedure of this type could be said to be surgery for stretch marks.
Generally when we refer to surgery for stretch marks, we are talking about laser treatment and not dissection.
Laser surgery for stretch marks is moderately effective in reducing the size of the marks or by disguising its outlines and blurring them. It is not effective in removal and that is something that needs to be understood by patients seeking treatment of their stretch marks.

But it is possible to reduce their incidence of and to minimize those that do occur, and the most effective method of treatment to date has been the development of laser procedures to minimize them.
So if you have developed stretch marks, be of good cheer. If they are treated early enough, you will be pleased to know that they can be reduced to a bearable level of appearance.
